Since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the United Nation has adopted many Conventions and recommendations in the field of international protection of human rights.

The U.N. has instituted a system of dealing with individual complaints on violations of human rights from throughout the world. This aspect of the U.N.'s work involves examination of those individual petitions for the purpose of deciding whether they show a trend of gross violations of human rights. If so, the Question of Gross Violations in the country concerned will be placed on the Agenda of the Annual sessions of the U.N. Commission of Human Rights for examination and action.
